It’s no surprise that the Aladin Prime has become a staple computer of dive schools. It’s robust, fairly easy to use and keenly priced at the budget end of the spectrum.
I’ve been testing one for readers, over a variety of dives, and I have grown to like most aspects. It’s a pretty comfortable dive computer to wear, and it provides all the essential information at a glance when in dive mode, namely depth, dive time, no stop or deco time and water temperature while level, replacing saturation adding an ascent rate percentage of maximum, when ascending. It also has a nitrogen loading graphic, which clearly shows when you entering deco time.
Operation during a dive is fully automatic, going into dive mode when the contacts get wet. The only thing you’re ever likely to need to do whilst on a dive is to turn on the backlight, which is easily done.
It’s on the surface where I have some problems with the Aladin Prime. The user interface, which is basically two buttons, is simply not that intuitive, and it means that having the handbook around is pretty much essential if you ever want to change things like Nitrox percentage. It’s a common enough problem, and is a corollary of keeping the number of buttons down to two.
The Prime is quite well specified when you do delve into the handbook. You can specify alarms and attention messages according to your own needs, and you can activate a safety stop timer and determine the duration. The computer also has a sophisticated built in dive planner, which allows you to plan single or repeated dives.
The log book stores dives with full information, including actual start times, and also keeps a record showing your total dive time across all dives logged, with the longest, deepest and overall number stored as well.
One of the best features is that the battery can be changed without sending the computer away to a specialist. Uwatec provide dealers with battery replacement kits, which include the battery itself and a new “O” ring. The whole process is very easy, using a coin to open the back of the case, replacing the battery and “O” ring and screwing the case back together. The computer even retains it’s memory during this process, although I don’t know how long for.
Overall Scubapro’s Uwatec Aladin Prime is a terrific dive computer for the recreational diver, with the added benefit of being Nitrox compatible. It’s robust, does it’s job well, and is exceptional value for money.

I tested one of these lamps over the weekend, and I surfaced impressed. The C Lite 8 is a good value for money lamp - here in Europe it's priced at €99 and most US sites seem to sell it for around $100. That's the price of the lamp itself, although you can buy it with a nifty little backup lamp, which is much smaller, for another €30.
