Choosing a Dive Mask

Given that vision is the one sense we retain fully when we’re diving, choosing the correct mask is absolutely vital if you are to enjoy your diving.

It goes without saying that you should only purchase a mask designed for diving, rather than a snorkelling mask, for example. A diving mask will feature toughened glass suitable for the pressure experienced at depth.

Overall Fit
Try to match your mask as closely as possible to your face shape. The easiest way to test if the shape is correct is to push the mask onto your face and breathe in through your nose. Even without the strap in place, the mask should stay on your face as you maintain pressure. If it leaks air at the sides and falls off, find another one.

Design
Modern designs tend to be quiet large, and this gives you a better field of vision. But be aware that the greater the internal volume, the more adjustment you will need to make to allow for pressure changes. Having clear or opaque skirts let more light into the mask, which can be a help in poor visibility.

Skirt
These days all good masks come with silicon skirts as opposed to neoprene. It’s much better at sealing, and less susceptible to damage from UV rays.

Strap
Again, straps are now made from the same material, but offer a choice of tightening and release mechanisms. Go for a mask with release buttons on the side, this makes adjustment and removal at the surface much easier.

Preparation
Once you have your new mask home, you will need to remove any manufacturer’s residue from the glass. The best product to use is toothpaste – rub it firmly onto both the inside and the outside of the glass in a circular motion.

There are several anti fog solutions available, but having tried several, nothing seems to work as well for me as good old spit!

Aftercare
If you look after your mask well, it will last years. After diving, rinse it thoroughly in clean, fresh water and let it dry out of the sun before packing it back into its box.
