Living on Lanzarote is great. If you are a diver living here, it doesn’t get much better, and I recently discovered that on our nearby Island of Fuerteventura, there is an institute for the mentally disabled, and on Lanzarote there is a newly built residential care home, either of which this week I considered checking myself into.
You see, a friend of mine has come out for 10 days diving, she is 23 and sickeningly qualified for a girl of that age, but as it is with a different organisation to mine I can live with that.
We went to try out a new dive site here, yes I will get to that, but as we were going down the steps to get into the water at Playa Chica, this bloke was heard to say, and at this stage I should say he was older than me, but wont be getting any older!, “Isn’t that nice seeing a young girl diving with her Grandad!!” Dad I can handle, but Grandad?!.
So to the dive, although I have almost lost the will to tell you about it. It is only accessible by boat, not a problem with the services of Jorge, the owner of a dive school called Timanfaya Sub, a very diver friendly school, and one of only 2 on the island with a shop.
The dive site is called Punta Tiñosa.
The start is below some 25mtr cliffs situated between Playa Chica and Marina Rubicon, entry in the water is just offshore in about 7mtrs, the scenery is pretty good with large volcanic outcrops. we swum out almost due South until we reached an area of Black sand and here it looks like the dive is finished, but a little further and suddenly you are on the top of a reef that drops just like the cliffs on land.
There are a number of caves to explore, and on this one dive alone we saw a number of sharks, and some huge rays. At one stage we had the amusing site of a huge sting ray swimming with a very small seemingly harmless electric ray alongside , I say seemingly unless you are daft enough to touch it! The large rays were unbelievably friendly, swimming very close. It’s a site worth exploring more for the few bob it costs to hire the boat.

I did this dive a couple of weeks after Mick did, and I can confirm it's a great one. As it's only accessible by boat the fish seem less scared of divers - in fact a ray proved more than a little curious about looking me in the eye, and I managed to fin backwards quite fast!
I particularly enjoyed the undersea terrain here - it's a bit like flying through canyons as there are several lava pinnacles under the surface.
