Dive Sites - The Rabat Wreck, Lanzarote

Barracuda Photo

The Rabat is a freighter which struck the reef off Arrecife and sank on the spot about 20 years ago. All the Lanzarote dive clubs run boats to the wreck, which is a ten minute rib ride out of Arrecife Harbour.

There is a permanent marker buoy, which is tied onto the wheelhouse. The ship is about 35 meters long, lying on her port side, and is largely intact. The bow and wheelhouse area are at about 18 meters depth, with the propeller and sea bed at 42 meters.

Descending the line, the ship will come into view immediately, as visibility is excellent in this area. You’ll be able to orient yourself easily. There can be a current here, so check the direction and plan which way you’ll navigate around the vessel on that basis.

The wheelhouse is certainly worth investigating, and you can penetrate the main holds, although you should be careful of ropes and cables. The propeller and some brass portholes are all still in place and can make for some great photos.

Swim 20-30 meters away from the wreck and you'll find all sorts of debris on the sea bed - including cables, winches and various unidentifiable pieces.

The hull is covered with anemones and in many places you’ll find sea urchins, so take care. You’re very likely to see barracuda in this area, the occasional moray eel and the schools of damsel so common to Lanzarote.

If you’re a visiting diver, do ask a local dive school about a trip to The Rabat – it’s certainly the most interesting wreck in the waters of Lanzarote.
