Many divers go through a whole career without experiencing a night dive. And if you’re anything like I was, it may be a case of deliberately avoiding them!
Night diving was something I never planned to do. If I’m honest, the thought of being submerged and having no idea what might be swimming towards me held no appeal at all.
And then one day a buddy arranged a night dive for me and uttered the immortal challenge “You’re not scared, are you?” Of course I wasn’t!
We dived the harbour wall at Puerto del Carmen, never getting deeper than 7 meters, and it was a complete revelation for me. You can only see within the beam of your lamp, and instead of being fearful, I found it actually made me concentrate much more on what was going on within that narrow beam. It was fascinating to see so many small creatures which are either not around during the day, or that you miss because you’re looking at the “big picture.”
That first night dive will stay with me for ever, I could have spent hours (in fact we did spend a long time out – air lasts ages at those depths) just pootling around watching all the critters go about their business. I’ve subsequently jumped at every chance for a night dive, and my all time favourite was on Thistlegorm in The Red Sea.
If you get a chance, sign up for a night dive!
